Please introduce yourself first!

Zhang An:

My name is Zhang An, I've been in Nanjing for almost seven years and graduated with a degree in journalism. I started to be interested in photography after I went to university, at first I used my mobile phone to take photos, but slowly I took more and more photos and saved up money to have my own camera. From a photography enthusiast, I now seem to be able to call myself a photographer.

cusp. :

How would you describe your creations? What are your favourite devices and accessories and what are your stories about them?

Zhang An:

I have not used a lot of cameras, the beginning of the main use of the Ricoh GR2 and Canon 70D, and now in the use of three, respectively, Sony A7R2, Ricoh GR2 and Olympus TG4. these cameras have their own strengths and weaknesses, I think.

I especially like the Ricoh GR's colours and the positive presets that come with the camera, the camera is palm-sized and it's very convenient to take it out for a walk or to take pictures of daily life, the flash that comes with it is also very good, the amount of light can be adjusted, the downside is that you can't zoom, and occasionally focusing is a little bit slow. But I think do not force a device can do all, a device comes with some limitations and shortcomings, but will inspire some inspiration, add some characteristics to the photo. The Olympus TG4 was even given to me by a good friend who didn't want it anymore, and this card camera is really so playful, you can shoot underwater (the body is waterproof), you can shoot super macro (the camera's macro mode is called microscope mode!) There's also a fisheye lens and lots of messy filters for everyday carry around shots. Lastly the Sony A7R2, image quality is adequate and it's not very heavy, the bad thing is that I don't really like Sony's colours, it feels clunky, like smashed and gnawed copper peas.

The Ricoh GR was dropped in a gutter once by me, the water go through the whole thing, and the camera had several big bubbles. I picked it up and shook off the water, put it into the rice, and then put it under the lamp at night to bake it slowly on a small fire, and then put it into a cool place to blow the wind for a day the next day, and then inserted the batteries and recovered perfectly, but after half a year, it started to be unresponsive, shut down automatically or stuck, and replaced the rusty motherboard and now it's fine again.

When it comes to frequently used accessories, it is necessary to mention the star filter, already do not know how many times in the Weibo promotion. Twenty or thirty pieces can get a superb sense of achievement and surprise. The star filter is the ability to turn the glowing point in the picture into a star when shooting, and depending on whether you buy four, six or eight stars into the corresponding several stars. Whether you are just starting out or have entered the "burnout" period of photography, you can play with star filter, in addition to the novelty, the star filter also gave me a lot of understanding of the process of light into the lens and then to the light-sensitive original and inspired, after all, when you look at the star filter, it is just a regular polygonal indentation carved in the glass. This inspired a lot of my understanding of receiving light and subsequently thinking of many ways to play with light.

I also wanted to share a tiny lens, a 48 yuan plastic lens I bought from the Canyon Taobao shop, with which I got a lot of unexpected images and a deeper understanding of how lenses work.

Can you tell us more about your project?

Zhang An

Florida Water  series is a rather loose project, and up to now the photos of this project are not fixed, sometimes some are stuffed in and sometimes some are deleted. The reason for this project (let's call it a project) is very simple, just that I often go hiking to take photos, and if I don't bring Florida Water with me, I will be eaten by mosquitoes. When I look back at those photos, I can smell the scent of flower water. The three images contained in the name of Florida Waterare also the objects I often photograph.

Other creations are also similar to Florida Water which is to take a lot of photos and then select and organise them to make some groupings.

What are some of your usual favourite nature places to visit?

Zhang An:

When I went to school in Nanjing, the main places I went to were the hills and riding greenways next to the school. The main places I can name are Yangshan Park and along the Jiuxiang River. Whenever there was no class in the afternoon, I would go out from the school gate with my Ricoh GR, Florida Water, and Star filter and walk around. I knew which hill was best for watching the sunset, I knew that in May there was an uphill road where there would be an explosion of orb-like spider webs, I knew that there were two waterfronts where it was easiest to photograph wobbling mosquitoes and bats, and I knew that if I walked along the Jiuxiang River it would eventually merge into the Yangtze River. On weekends, I would look for places of interest on the map, saw almost every Yangtze River bridge in Nanjing, and went to Jiangxinzhou and Bagazhou several times, curious about these tiny land masses surrounded by water.

After graduation, I lived at the foot of Zhongshan in Nanjing, and there are three or four frequently travelled routes, which are basically similar to the distribution of underground stations. There are three or four routes, basically similar to the distribution of subway stations. They are Xu Hongxian Tomb, Weiduo Lane, and Clover Garden towards the Botanical Gardens and White Horse Park. Each entrance to go into and a lot of off-ramps, the space to explore than around the school a lot of orders of magnitude larger, basically is to see the roadside can go into the man-made stepped out of the path will go in to drill a little, like a little caterpillar a little bit of eating Zhongshan this big leaf.

cusp. :

What was the order of your observations while on the mountain?

Zhang An:

This one is more random, I usually put on music and sing along. Most of the time what you want to shoot will come to you by itself. There's no set order, look up and down, left and right, near and far, it can be scary to miss at first, but you'll come to the same place many times and relax a bit to see more.

cusp. :

Share some of the amazing encounters you've had in nature with plants and animals or the forces of nature!

Zhang An:

The first story was shared with me by a friend, she said that she had climbed an old road in Zijinshan Mountain with her friend before and came across a deer carcass on the road, I was so envious and wanted to see it too, even if there was still skeleton left. She said there should be no more, that road is a ranger may, will regularly clean up these. So jealous that she got to see such a sight and curious how the ranger felt at the sight.

The second story is an encounter with a wild boar that is quite common in NanJing. That day I was descending the mountain, the sky is already a little bit light, I heard a rustling sound in front of me, and tried to see what it was, and looked for a long time before I could see that it was a big black butt, a big wild boar! It was a big boar! My heart skipped a beat, and when I stood there wondering what to do, the big arse wriggled and went off into the woods by itself. The next day I had a smaller one walk past me during the day. Another time is to meet the kind of newborn not big small flower pig from my front calmly walked past, and then next to me to arch the leaves looking for food, broad daylight how can a mother let such a small wild boar run around, so I was worried that a big wild boar suddenly came out to give me knocked away, but good news is that these did not happen, the piggy went away on its own, and I stood in place to share with my friend that I had just seen the piggy, a weasel and then a weasel. walked past me along the path that the piglet had just come from, I couldn't breathe and thought of the fox that trailed the priest at the end of the second season of fleabag. My friend asked me to bring some apple slices in the future, and when I met a wild boar I could feed it to appease it, and I thought a lot at once, such as feeding the cooked wild boar of this mountain and finally riding it to be a wild boar princess or something ......

The third story, which has also been told many times, is about meeting a nest of spiders that are born. Charlotte's Web tells us that spiders lay all of their eggs in an egg sack woven out of spider silk, from which thousands of tiny spiders crawl out the following spring to begin their lives directly. This egg band I came across was hanging from a banana leaf and crawled all over every banana leaf at once, screaming and snapping furiously as it did so.

cusp. :

Do you usually go hiking alone or with friends? What are some of the most fun and amazing stories guys?

Zhang An:

I go out more alone, but when I have friends with me, I will take them on my favourite routes, and when I go on these routes by myself, I will also come up with many ideas for portraits. When I walk these routes by myself, besides taking photos of the scenery, I also come up with many ideas for portraits, and I can realise these ideas with my friends. 22 years after I met Nien Nien, I basically took her to all of my favourite places on Jongsan from May to July, and I had a lot of fun taking photos of each other.

cusp. :

What are some of your favourite emoticon? What do you think about the relationship of emoticon to yourself and to the creation of your selfie series?

Zhang An:

The extensive use of emoticon was actually inspired by my favourite singer Caroline Polachek. She has a precise control over the visual design of her albums, and before starting a project she identifies some visual elements that will be used for this album. Her second album alone features images of spirals, ants, volcanoes and many historical legends from the Mediterranean region. When she posts new songs on social media, she also uses different fonts that fit with them, and I was struck by how unified and full of detail and content the visual control is, not only does it require a huge amount of effort, but more importantly, enough content and accumulation of her own. It inspired and encouraged me, and I feel that my creations will be a tribute to her for a long time to come.

What I learnt from her is not only how to start a project, but also how to show a complete and interesting self in many ways, and to "possess" some symbols as my own. That's why I chose some face characters for my WeChat name and signature -- ꕥ᭄ Zhang Anꦿঞ, and even at the beginning of this exhibition I wanted to name it with four face characters symbols -- ꕥ᭄ঞ ꩜ ࿐, but I thought I couldn't pronounce the name verbally to someone, so I had to stop. I like to match ε(*·ω·)_/゚:·☆ when posting photos, throwing down some glitter.

My selfies started early, before these face texts, but they have unity on different sides. I think it's very sick when one keeps focusing on oneself, constantly examining oneself, criticising oneself but occasionally feeling that one is not that bad, it's a constant torment to go back and forth, selfies were a means to carry out this torment in the beginning, after almost seven years of non-stop selfies, I've been able to get out of this self-consumption, and taking selfies is more about documenting and bringing pleasure. I've been able to get out of this self-consumption and take more selfies to document and bring pleasure.

What cultural/factors influence your creations/designs?

Zhang An:

Most of all, I was influenced by music, by the artwork and music videos that accompanied some of the music pieces. These works are conceptually complete and succinctly to the point, but are often overlooked. I'll never forget the shock I felt when I first learned about Lady Gaga in high school, she's really been misunderstood for so long that even before I knew her I thought she was a clown who just dressed up in crazy costumes to get people's attention. The artwork and mv's of her first few albums and the way she dressed on the streets during the corresponding period were a loop of ideas and concepts that were so complete it was scary. My favourite artist of the last two years is the same way, she has a precise grasp of every detail of her albums, finely polished yet with many symbols and clues buried. All of this inspires me a lot.

cusp. :

What are your daily hobbies other than walking?

Zhang An:

I like to play games and watch live streams on a daily basis. Games I play include King's Pride, Terraria, and puzzle mini-games like the Embroidery Lake series. When retouching pictures, I'll put on some live game streams or film commentaries as white noise to fill up the spare attention.

cusp. :

What are the current concerns and thoughts?

Zhang An:

At the moment, apart from daily shooting, I'm mainly thinking about my second photography book, and I'm more concerned about how to realise my ideas and the "degree" of their presentation. I even gradually feel that the most important thing in the realisation of a work is how to grasp this degree appropriately. If the clues are too clear, it will look a bit dull, and if they are too subtle, the relationship between the two will be broken. I want my ideas and presentation to be in a delicate zone.

This is even more difficult for photography because the raw material is only the image, and even if they can be presented in different sizes and arrangements on different papers, it's still a relatively homogenous material. And attaching too much meaning to a photographic work seems to go against some of the original intentions of photography. What is the right balance is a dilemma that has been bothering me lately.

cusp. :

Think the happiest thing that ever happened to you?

Zhang An:

Every time I go out, I worry that I'll get nothing today, but I basically end up coming across something surprising, and it's times like these that I feel happy and satisfied.

Tell us about some of the interesting things that happen inside work and creativity and life!

Zhang An:

It's safe to say that I'm obsessed with the whole avatar changing thing. It's really hard to find the perfect avatar! There are a lot of things to consider, such as the quality of the image, if your avatar is too high definition, it will be blurry when compressed into a small piece of the chat box due to internet crashes or something like that. There is also how to make the picture eye-catching and memorable in a small box, and finally to be able to express some of their own ideas and aesthetics, to some specific holidays and anniversaries but also some of today's limited themed avatars, without revealing the commemoration.

There is no specific standard to judge whether an avatar is a good avatar, all rely on the eyes are feeling, bad avatars is not good to look at, look at the eyes will be difficult to see, often a change is to change for half an hour, there is also a fight to the end did not find the right avatar time, I had to use some of the previous commonly used avatars back.

In the end, I think I still take myself too seriously, just avatars will take so much effort in the end, no one will pay more attention, quite funny, but I can feel satisfied on their own.

How do you see the relationship between life and work?

Zhang An:

I envy people who have another job in addition to their creative work, especially one that has almost nothing to do with exhibition art. Knowledge of different fields gives people different experiences and different perspectives of the world, and is the key to enter other levels of the world.

Always focusing on one's own work will only make one narrower and narrower, one must have life before photography. More often than not I feel that my life is my work, I tend to throw out different images and words on various social media platforms to form different sides of me, using different avatars and words to form intertexts, love this little game.

What do you think about the theme of this exhibition?

Zhang An:

I especially like the theme of this exhibition, and I'm very grateful to Ge and Ye Yi for their dedication, you really took a serious look at me and my photography to design such a chic exhibition.

The exhibition has actually chosen a lot of photos that I didn't pay much attention to, and they have been liked by a lot of people, giving me a new perspective on how to look at and edit my images.

" Dal Segno” is not really a term I would use myself, but it is apt. With two versions of the exhibition, from dawn to dusk and night to sunrise, it's as if I'm literally carrying the camera on my back all the time as I make one continuous image mark after another.

And I especially like the wall with the traces of the borders of the photographs of the two versions of the exhibition at the same time, I like this sense of craftsmanship and variability.

During the process of setting up the exhibition, I often felt a sense of unfamiliarity, like, "Did I really take these photos?" "What if I didn't actually take them?" But when I look at the photos again, I can clearly remember when and where they were taken and even my mood at the time, which clearly proves that they are all my photos. I guess the exhibition helped me to reacquaint myself with my photos.

Thank you ©️ Zhang An
