accessible between 12:00 - 19:00 (closed on Monday)

Address:

To launch the latest publication Science of the Secondary: Floor, CuspDot and Atelier HOKO has come together to present “FLOOR EXERCISES”, running from 18 May to 14 July. We invite the audience to participate in a series of activities revolving around the floor. Alongside with this installation, is a display of all previous publications from the Science of the Secondary series and the accompanying experience-based content for each issue.

Science of the Secondary has been produced by the Singaporean artist duo Atelier HOKO since 2013. Each issue focuses on the study of a common everyday object, ranging from apples, cups, and clocks to windows, doors, pipes, eggs, toilet paper, plates, bins, and more. These objects are among the most familiar items in daily life, found in every country and region. Emphasizing and studying such objects and everyday experiences serve to convey a more universal value system and connect with a broader audience. Additionally, the research is infused with humor and critique, challenging traditional norms and exploring more possibilities in everyday behavior.

As creators, Atelier HOKO hopes that the audience will not only be spectators but also participants in the exhibition, collaborating with them to create the exhibition itself. As for the exhibition space itself, they also hope that the exhibition is not a pile of academic clutter, but rather a space where any audience member can easily enter, observe, and see the deeper meanings and possibilities of these everyday objects. They are always considering how to build relationships between the space itself, the exhibited works, and the participating audience. Can the audience safely and comfortably explore more possibilities regarding the everyday object—the floor—in our constructed space? Can we challenge and question traditional norms of daily behavior and rethink the relationship between everyday objects and ourselves? The participation, writing, and reactions of the participants are the directions that this exhibition itself wants to explore.

* To enter the exhibition, please take off your shoes. The space is always ready to provide you with a happy, safe, and comfortable environment. Please listen to the staff's guidance and let them know if you need assistance.

With “Floor” as the next subject for the Science of the Secondary series, this installation facilitates an ongoing inquiry into our daily, consistent yet mostly unnoticed interaction with the floor. In this exhibition, the space becomes an environment for action, the visitor is no longer a mere spectator. Unremarkable, absurd, and silly actions become considerable. A normal routine becomes the performance of a routine. The only unusual feature will be the attentiveness brought to bear on them. In this respect, to fully experience this exhibition, one must participate.

The title of this exhibition is “Floor Exercises”- it is also a near-accurate description of what the gallery is positioned as and how visitors will be experiencing the floor within. 30 printouts of Floor Exercises are displayed around the room. The room is an environment for action.

The visitors are participants. No footwear allowed. Upon entering, The room is quite empty. The floors are sparsely populated by a few random objects (prompts)Sheets of printed instructions dot the walls. At the opposite end of the room, a low table with a computer terminal and printer sits. On first impression, one would think that the content of this exhibition centers on the “artworks” displayed. This is not incorrect. As the participant progresses, she cannot help thinking of the seemingly random objects scattered around, suspecting of being accompanying props to which specific “exercises” can be carried out. The participant is slightly hesitant….should she perform one of the “exercises” on the wall? There is only another couple in the gallery, they seem oblivious to her. She decided to go ahead and kneel down, lowering her face down to the floor, until the top of her nose hovers right above the floor, and began sniffing…Behind her, pinned on the wall, a sheet of “floor exercise” that reads:

#09

Lower your face until your nostrils barely touch the floor.
Begin sniffing.

Arriving at the low table, one is informed that it is possible to contribute a “floor exercise” to be printed out from the computer terminal and put up alongside those already up on the wall. Everybody can think of doing something silly. Maybe another visitor of the show will perform this instruction later…

Who knows?

#09

Lower your face until your nostrils barely touch the floor. Begin sniffing.

Science of the Secondary #15 Floor 地板

PUBLICATION
2024

Very few things in our everyday life thrive by doing absolutely nothing. The floor, might just be a rare exception; devoid of any vitality or ambition characteristics at odds with a society obsessed with progress it remains unapologetically passive. Yet, despite its unyielding commitment to inertia, the floor remains largely ignored and relegated to the background; one would think that its sheer size alone, comparable to that of the lesser tamed ground that we trample upon outdoors, ought to make it a subject of wide interest. As the only building element that we physically contact with the most, our expectations of the floor are disappointingly pragmatic; it should not shake, give way, or tilt. Mostly, it should be flat as we all know of those amongst us, who descent into melo dramatic despair each time they encounter an uneven floor, though the rationale behind such obsession with flatness is beyond us here…

As it is with any new book, the problem of “how to launch” is always something to consider. Typically, book releases are organised in bookstores or libraries, and if the author is famous enough, maybe a large auditorium. As independent authors and publishers behind the Science of the Secondary series, we are also burdened with this aspect of book-selling; how do we tell people that the next issue is out? But rather than walk straight into a bookstore and asking if it's possible that we do a launch party there (it is a rather strange pretext for a party…), we thought maybe we should use the idea of a “book launch” as a starting point to develop experience-centric events in the form of installations, exhibitions, performance or a simple exercise video. Slowly, this became integral to the publication, so much so that sometimes, the event happens even before we finish printing the book! These singular, thematic events are affectionately called “cura-cura” (short for “curate”) and is often mentioned when our research is at the tail end: “So, what are we going to do for curacura?”….

A Fruit Stall Launch

2013

To launch Science of the Secondary: Apple, Atelier HOKO decided to distribute and retail the books through 5 selected fruit stalls located in Singapore for a limited period of time. Each purchase of the book was accompanied by one free apple(fruit). Selected friends were also presented with the “Apple Ticket” to redeem their free copy of the book + fruit at the nearest fruit stall.

Another Mad Afternoon At Home

2015

On 31st August 2015, 15000 postcards, each with a specific instruction, was released through personal invitations and also as an accompanying activity to the latest publication from the Science of the Secondary series.

For the first installment of a building-centric research initiative under the Science of the Secondary series, the common Door, Window, and Pipe were chosen as starting points towards an inquiry into the openings of a dwelling. Drawing from the findings of this study, Atelier HOKO developed “Another Mad Afternoon at Home”; an activity piece that contains sixty instructional postcards to be performed by individuals in the comfort of their own home. Using the familiarity of everyday actions and materials to investigate and experience the different openings, this project attempts to draw a closer and more intimate relationship between people and buildings.

My Rubbish is Your Rubbish

2012

In April 2022, two hundred pieces of Atelier HOKO’s rubbish were sealed and distributed through the latest two publications from the Science of the Secondary series. We recognize that it is unusual to receive rubbish, much less so in a labeled package numbered in limited editions. Our intention is for you, the reader to ask “What to do with it?” Because it is not your rubbish, but in a way, you paid for it when you purchased the set of books. Will you trust Atelier HOKO enough to open the bag and extract the rubbish to examine without fear of unknown contaminants? Will you–after reading Science of the Secondary: Bin–decide to dispose of it intentionally? If so, will this be the first time you dispose of rubbish out of curiosity than necessity? Conversely, if the decision is to keep the rubbish, where will you keep it, and will it go against your natural instinct to bin all that is rubbish?

The archive section will present all previous Atelier HOKO activities, as well as all of Science of the Secondary issues #1-#14.

Science of the Secondary

Science of the Secondary is an inquisitive approach towards uncovering implicit conditions that exist in our experience of the everyday. When speaking of the term ‘secondary’, we are referring to conditions and sensations that human beings are not conscious of in their day-to-day interaction with things and the immediate surroundings. Accumulating this rich and boundless field of knowledge, the research hopes to draw upon a renewed sensibility towards living, with much excitement and freshness.

Atelier HOKO

Atelier HOKO (2002) is an independent research lab that focuses on the study of the growing disengagement between people, things and space. The atelier hopes to cultivate in people, an open-ness and ability to un-know, bringing about a heightened curiosity towards all phenomena by taking a fresh look at reality. Founded by Alvin Ho and Clara Koh.
