In this workshop, we will be divided into two parts: a lecture on walking and a photography practice led by Zhang An. During the lecture, we will re-evaluate walking from four perspectives: location, sensory exploration, embodiment, and rhythm. We will then analyze artistic practices related to walking to see how artists challenge traditional cartographic power relations through the act of walking, how they tell marginal narratives beyond the mainstream gaze, and how they discover different aspects of a place by opening up the body's senses. For the photography section, we hope it will be a continuation of the theoretical part of the lecture in practice. Before the practice, Zhang An will share his experience of walking and shooting in Hangzhou. After that, we will provide each participant with a map that only has an area but no route. Everyone can explore this area on foot without referring to mobile maps, and then combine photography to create their own map.
